- W31692813 abstract "Abstract To get ready previsional patterns of the fate of the heavy metals-containing landfill disposal in function of the residence time several studies were undertaken, but, up to now, experimental results do not fit real scale bahaviour. To characterize hazard level of solid waste and to establish its landfill disposal options, several elution tests, easy to do in laboratory scale, were proposed. The most known tests use for elution either CO 2 saturated water (IRSA-CNR method) or a buffered CH 3 COOH/CH 3 COO − solution at pH 5 (EPA method). These procedures give analytical different response from what are found in a real landfill leachate. Even if the materials, disposed in a landfill site, have overcome the release tests, leachates heavy metals concentrations exceed, in many cases, the values obtained by the leaching tests used to assure the acceptability disposal. These phenomena are due to the anaerobic environment and to the consequent biosynthesis of short chain fatty acid as acetic, propionic and so on that produce a pH fall. The aim of the present work is the search of the best operative conditions to obtain, by means of laboratory scale tests, heavy metals-containing (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) elutes similar to a landfill leachate. For this reason we have tested several eluents for the simulation of different environmental conditions: — distilled water — CO 2 saturated water — CH 3 COOH/CH 3 COO − buffer — EDTA 0.01 M solution — H 2 SO 4 /HNO 3 solution (acid rain) The sample analysed is a mixture of solid wastes coming from an hazardous landfill. The tests were carried out by means of the method proposed by Young and Wilson of the Waste Research Unit—Harwell Laboratory in 1982. Solid waste and eluents were mixed in 1:1 ratio; contact time monitored were: 3 hours, 1 days, 3 days, 7 days, 2 weeks and 1 month. The experiments will be continued up to 1 year contact time. Artificial ageing was carried out at two different temperatures: 25 and 60°C in order to simulate the processes that take place in a landfill site. A good agreement between experimental batch results at 25°C and real scale analytical data was found." @default.
