More prosaically, it is the administrative centre of a populous district in Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and has a population of nearly five million (1991 census). The most inclusively micro-cosmic of all India's tirthas, Benares is the very hypostasis of all major sacred spots located on Indian soil— the quintessence, one might say, of the concept of tirtha. Somewhere in Benares some temple or shrine serves as a surrogate for every im portant tirtha to which pilgrimage is undertaken elsewhere in the sub continent. As many tirthas as are to be found within this one super tirtha, so also are the representatives hailing from those distant places resident in Benares. It is common for the pilgrim guides in Benares to speak six or seven different languages. The wide appeal of the city as much as its prosperity has resulted in the establishment of permanent Buddhist, Jain, Muslim, Sikh and Christian communities, as well as those designated by language. The diverse ethnic origins of its inhab itants lends substance to the city's age-old attention to cosmic sym bolism.
