- W3170323193 abstract "Predictability was the motivation for adopting the technologies of steam, iron, and steel in shipbuilding; naval architecture theory and experimentation were the mechanisms to achieve accuracy in predicting their performance; and standardization was the reason that practicing constructors and shipbuilders integrated naval architecture theory and experimentation into ship design and construction. Standardization comes in different forms, which accomplish different economic purposes. Standards that establish minimum levels of safety and quality are useful when buyers are not, or cannot be, fully informed of every aspect of a product—for example, when a shipowner must decide on competing bids from different shipyards. If shipowners cannot readily distinguish higher-quality vessels from lower-quality ones, high-quality shipyards find it difficult to sustain their price premium and are undercut by low-quality sellers. Thus, minimum industry standards establish a floor for comparison and also reduce risk for the shipowner. Standardized products—sometimes called variety-reducing standards—limit the number of variations and levels of quality and safety, thus enabling economies of scale for sourcing and production of material by the shipbuilder. These standards also reduce risk for shipowner and shipbuilder alike, as they create a critical mass for emerging markets to have confidence in developing new technologies, such as when the shipping industry settled on compound steam engines as the industry norm. 1" @default.
