- W3170554382 abstract "Antenatal corticosteroids have been worldwide administered for women in a risk for preterm birth prior to 34 weeks gestational age. Their positive effects on neonatal outcomes have been well established, however, their effects among late preterm births (defined as given birth between 34 and 37 weeks of gestation) have shown limited and controversial results. This was a retrospective cohort study, conducted at Prince Sultan Military Medical City. All women that gave birth to a non- anomalous babies between 34 and 37 weeks were included in the study. Perinatal outcomes were retrieved from the hospital electronic database for the period between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2018. The perinatal outcomes were analysed through the comparison of two groups, whether the woman received or not antenatal corticosteroids. Data was analysed by using IBM SPSS ® version 20. Among all preterm births, 773/1174 (65.8%) were late preterm. In comparison between exposed (366/773, 47%) and non-exposed (407/773, 53%) group to antenatal corticosteroids, there was a significant higher rate of admission to neonatal intensive care unit, respiratory distress syndrome and transient tachypnea of newborn in exposed group (p values <0.001). Exposed neonates were born one week earlier, at 35 versus 36 weeks of gestation with birthweight lower than in unexposed to corticosteroid group (p value < 0.05). However, there were no statistical difference in majority of serious neonatal outcomes such as: chronic lung disease, intraventricular hemorrhage, sepsis, necrotising enterocolitis and death (p value >0.05). Although antenatal corticosteroids are known to decrease short term neonatal morbidities in preterm babies, prior 34 weeks gestational age, their benefits for late preterm births are not found in our study. Larger trials are recommended to assess whether antenatal corticosteroids improve late preterm neonatal outcomes." @default.
