- W3170693944 abstract "Reviewed by: Minister's Prayer Book: An Order of Prayers and Readings by John W. Doberstein David C. Drebes Minister's Prayer Book: An Order of Prayers and Readings. Revised Edition. By John W. Doberstein. Edited by Timothy J. Wengert et al. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2020. 458 pp. As I attempted to read and review this book critically, I frequently found that I drifted away from reading and into praying. Since this book is intended to ease busy pastors, deacons, and other ministers toward a prayerful encounter with God's Word, my experience is evidence that it does its job well. John W. Doberstein first published his Minister's Prayer Book in 1959. In his original introduction, retained and slightly edited in this new edition, he defined his intended audience as seminary students and working pastors. He reminded readers that those who are called to proclaim God's Word to others must also hear this Word for themselves. Yet Doberstein was all too aware of the difficulty ministers face in making time for the essential practice of receiving God's Word and responding with prayer and meditation. As ministers must respond to the many needs of their communities, Doberstein wondered, when will they concentrate upon prayer for the Holy Spirit, who, it is true, bids us be sensitive to the voices of the world, but also liberates us from bondage to them? (xvii). Timothy J. Wengert led a team of pastors and professors who revised Doberstein's answer to this concern. This new edition retains the format and most of the content of the original, with many of the updates simply making readings more compatible with current [End Page 208] practices in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. For example, a table of the Revised Common Lectionary is included, along with an assigned prayer of the day and a hymn from Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Readers will find a daily liturgy intended for the private use of those engaged in regular public ministry. While Doberstein acknowledged that pastors may receive pastoral care from colleagues, he also argued that in solitude a pastor may receive care directly from the Word of God. If the experience of pastoral care is a personal encounter with the Word of God addressed to my real situation, then whenever I listen to that Word addressed to me, I am the recipient of pastoral care (xix). To enable such encounters, Doberstein offered a daily liturgy beginning with an invitation to prayer, followed by hymns, prayers of confession, psalms, professions of faith, and other readings. These devotional liturgies comprise the first section. Each day has its own liturgy and its own theme. Sunday's theme is The Divine Institution and Mission of the Ministry. Other days center on The Minister as Preacher, or The Minister as Intercessor. The revision team made one major change to Doberstein's format: the combination of The Minister as Confessor and The Minister as Pastor into a single day. This allowed room for a new theme, The Minister as Teacher. Wengert writes in his preface that one motivation for including this theme was in part to welcome deacons—many of whom have special calls in education (xii). Of course, pastors also spend significant time as teachers and will benefit from prayerful focus on this role. The second section includes the lectionary table with proper prayers and hymns. The third section collects multiple Prayers of Preparation for Ministry, a helpful resource for occasions such as opening a congregational meeting or even washing one's hands before vesting. The fourth section is an anthology of readings related to each of the weekday themes. Readers will encounter selections from the life of the church, past and present. While the revised edition includes significantly more selections from female authors than Doberstein's [End Page 209] original text, some readers will be disappointed by the relative scarcity of female authors. The final section is a series of appendices, including Luther's Household Prayers and A Simple Way to Pray. Like the earlierPrayers of Preparation for Ministry, these appendices provide a readily available resource for those who need help with prayer practices. Such help is necessary for many ministers..." @default.
