- W317075080 abstract "HYMN INTERPRETATION One of the favorite hymns of the River Brethren (a small church group located primarily in Pennsylvania and Iowa) is the hymn O thou precious love of Jesus. This article will first describe where that hymn came from and then will discuss the hymn in its current usage context.1 The hymn originated at the Ephrata Cloister. Konrad Beissel, the leader of the Cloister, wrote the hymn. It appeared for the first time in Goettliche Liebes und Lob esleto en e^ 1630, with six stanzas.2 Some time after that, the early River Brethren began to use the hymn. They included it in a little booklet they compiled entitled Di^s aller neuste Harfenspiel (1795). Later books of theirs included only three stanzas of the hymn. Today most of the River Brethren sing those three stanzas in English from Spiritual hymns.3 As mentioned above, the original context of the hymn was the eighteenth-century Ephrata Cloister near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.4 Its founder, the strongwilled and charismatic Conrad Beissel, broke away from the pietistic Schwarzenau Brethren. In 1732 he moved to a wilderness area to begin a semi-monastic community with a unique spirituality. Taking mystical themes from Jacob Boehme and the Inspirationists, he emphasized the role of direct, inner religious experience over the written Word. Beissel implemented strict practices of asceticism in order to cultivate this inner life and to prepare the soul to meet the heavenly bridegroom. These included strict diets (almost exclusively vegetarian), not marrying, a unique style of singing, and the discipline of watching (two hours each midnight spent watching for Christ's return). Despite what the hymn may have meant to Beissel in its original context, the River Brethren sing it today in a very different context. They sing only a fragment of the hymn, and that in a loose translation. The remainder of this essay will explain the hymn as it is understood by them today. To begin with, the hymn is a communion hymn. The River Brethren hold their communion services during weekend events called Lovefeast. Bearing similarities to the Lovefeast of other Brethren churches and of the Moravians, this event runs from Saturday morning until Sunday noon. The weekend is an extended time of fellowship. Visitors usually come from neighboring and even from distant congregations, boarding overnight at the homes of families in the local congregation. This meeting is usually a high point of the year for the Brethren, who have very little other structure in their church year. Although the River Brethren don't consider their meetings liturgical, the event does include a structure and a list of scripture passages that are read each time. The setting may be a barn, shed, school building, or community center large enough to handle the expanded crowd. The meeting begins on Saturday morning, and runs through the evening, with breaks for meals. Throughout the weekend the menu features items such as rice soup, roast beef, sandwiches, fruit, applesauce, peaches, and plenty of cookies. The featured scriptures are Isaiah 53, about Jesus being the servant who gives his life for sin; Ephesians 4, about fellowship in the Spirit; 1 Corinthians 11, which addresses both headship in the church (God, Christ, man, woman) and the communion service itself; John 19, about the sufferings of Christ; and John 13, about foot washing. The communion service proper takes place during the Saturday evening meeting. It begins with the foot washing ritual, where the church members wash each other's feet using a basin and a towel as Jesus did. The chairs are rearranged into several long rows, and the church members work in pairs, each either washing or drying the feet of two people. The communion service follows. The communicants seat themselves around long, narrow tables, and break bread in turn from one to the other down the row. The bread, kneaded and baked on site during the day, is a flat, unleavened cake cut into long strips. …" @default.
