- W3171004084 abstract "Tracking, that is grouping students with different achievement levels into different classrooms, is controversially discussed as fostering inequalities in educational outcomes. For this reason, many school systems have implemented detracking, the abolishment of ability grouping, and the establishment of mixed-ability classrooms. Research argues that mixed-ability classrooms foster low achievers’ academic self-concept because this group of students loses their negative track branding, the labeling hypothesis. However, an opposing view is that mixed-ability classrooms expose low achievers to more high-achieving peers on average, thus hurting the academic self-concept of low-achieving students due to unfavorable social comparison processes, the contrast hypothesis. The present study juxtaposes both hypotheses using two natural experiments which represents a step forward in terms of the methodological rigor both views have been investigated with. Specifically, the present study used data from two detracking school reforms (N Study 1 = 78,376 students, N Study 2 = 2,202 students), employing a cohort-control design and comparing student cohorts before detracking with same-age student cohorts after detracking. In line with the contrast hypothesis, in both studies, low achievers had a lower self-concept in detracked cohorts as opposed to the tracked ones. However, high achievers’ self-concept did not differ between the cohorts. Our study sheds light on the long-lasting debate between the labeling and the contrast hypothesis and highlights potential side effects of detracking school reforms that might result from low achievers being exposed to unfavorable social comparison processes." @default.
