- W3171463988 abstract "Zipf’s law for city populations is a well-known statement regarding the proportions between the most populous cities of a given area, first mentioned by German physicist Felix Auerbach (Auerbach 1913, Zipf 1949, Simon 1955). Many observers, including Paul Krugman, have held Zipf’s law to be universal (Krugman 1996). In the following however I show that although nations do universally follow the law, they do not follow the law universally well: namely, that the largest cities of several nations generally thought to be protectors of human rights—the United States, Britain, France, Germany—appear to fit this law, whereas several other nations generally thought to perform poorly as defenders of human rights—Russia, China, Cuba—fit the law less well. These results are then compared to the cities of the Korean peninsula: South Korean cities follow the rule more closely than North Korean cities. I conjecture that political regimes can—and do—influence some underlying natural process that drives the formation of Zipf’s law." @default.
