- W3172027204 abstract "The application of conventional spectrometers for the study of s-particle energy spectra in a nuclear reaction is often complicated by the difficulties due to background radiation from the accelerator or the nuclear reactor in use. This fact is particularly expressive in the experimental study of the (n, ~z) reaction with thermal neutrons. Low value of the cross-section of the (n, e) reaction together with a high cross-section of the competing process of radiative neutron capture (cr~/~r~ ,~ 10 -6 - 10-9) leads to special requirements on design of the c~-particle spectrometer. The usual detector and target arrangement in the 2re geometry placed in the neutron beam only permitted to measure the cz-particle energy spectra with a rather poor energy resolution and high background [1-5]. An essential improvement of experimental conditions has been attained in paper [6], where the authors mounted the silicon detector at a great distance from the target at a place with a lower radiation field. A low efficiency of such an arrangement was compensated partially with the aid of an e-particle electrostatic focusing system. In paper [7] the conventional arrangement of the target and detector in 2zt-geometry was improved by using a special circuit eliminating the pulses from gamma radiation and a bismuth filter reducing the fast neutron and gamma ray background from the nuclear reactor core. In paper [8] we have used an experimental arrangement where only the target has been placed in the neutron beam to study the a-particle spectra from the 149Sm (n, e) reaction. Further improvement of the experimental arrangement described in the present article-is based on the use of a telescope consisting of two silicon semiconductor detectors. This telescope was used to study the energy spectra of s-particles from the (n, e) reaction on 18~ 149Sm, and 143Nd isotopes and from 235U ternary fission" @default.
