- W3173060723 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Traditionally pubertal growth phase is assessed using hand wrist radiographs and in the recent past evaluation of morphological changes of cervical vertebrae has become also equally helpful. The use of non invasive biomarkers as maturation indicator which potentially eliminates any supplemental radiation exposure is definitely advantageous over the radiographic methods since they are totally subjective and can have magnification errors.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate salivary alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in growing subjects and its potential role as skeletal maturation indicator and also to compare its validity against with hand wrist radiographic assessment (MP3) and cephalometric CVM Method.MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 60 growing individuals in growing age for skeletal maturation aged between 8 and 18 years. Saliva samples were collected and measured using photospectrometrically. Hand wrist radiographs were assessed by Hagg and Taranger method and Lateral cephalograms were assessed by Hassel and Farman method respectively.RESULTS: Salivary alkaline phosphatase, MP3 and cervical vertebral maturation were analysed using ANOVA. The results showed significant correlation between the salivary alkaline phosphatase and cervical vertebral maturation methods. The highest mean ALP values was seen in peak stages of the pubertal growth.CONCLUSION: Salivary alkaline phosphatase can be used as non invasive biochemical marker for assessing the skeletal maturation." @default.
