- W3173937117 abstract "For the refiners to remain in transportation fuel business, changes in refinery configurations and operations have to be made to produce fuels meeting tier II sulfur requirements. For gasoline production the octane loss has to be minimized. The FCC gasoline can be fractionated into three fractions and treated separately. The treatments are: caustic treating for light gasoline, selective hydrotreating for medium gasoline and conventional hydrotreating for heavy gasoline. For on-road diesel, judicious selection of easy-to-treat feedstock is a potential strategy. For difficult-to-treat feed, the operation system must be improved: the reactor internals and distributor trays modified, reactor volume increased, active catalyst chosen and dense loaded, and operated at a higher severity. In some cases, a two-stage severe hydrotreater using Ni-Mo and precious metal catalysts in the first and the second stage respectively can be used. Beside the hydrodesulfurization technology, the logistic in the refinery have to be integrated to make production and delivery of ultra low sulfur fuel feasible and profitable. Thus, the over-all impacts of the low sulfur requirement on the refinery could be profound, including reduction in profitability, changes in preferred crude and product slates and process unit utilization.
