- W3174379969 abstract "Biofortification is an emerging technique to enhance the nutrient profile of staple crops, while being financially affordable for developing countries. Vitamin A deficiency is a problem of epidemic proportions in many countries and recent studies have emerged to study the efficacy of biofortification of maize to improve vitamin A status. Sows (Sus scrofa domesticus) were given either a biofortified provitamin A maize diet or megadose of retinyl palmitate at the beginning of pregnancy in order to determine the efficacy of maternal-fetal transfer of vitamin A using these two routes of delivery. Sows were fed the biofortified maize diet throughout pregnancy and lactation, while control sows were fed a vitamin A-free white maize diet, after receiving the oral vitamin A dose at insemination. Three piglets from each sow were killed at birth and 14 days, and blood was collected at varying time points. Organs collected for vitamin A analysis were liver, lung, spleen, adrenals, and kidneys and analyzed for vitamin A using HPLC methods. Organs and serums are currently being analyzed. Funded by the World Health Organization and HarvestPlus." @default.
