- W3174814307 abstract "The widespread adoption of various types of distributed computing environments, such as clusters, grids, clouds, fog and edge platforms, brought new challenges to workload scheduling. As the applications processed on these environments get more complex and demanding, effective allocation of resources and efficient workload scheduling are essential in order to achieve good performance and load balancing. This paper focuses on the scheduling of complex application jobs, where each job comprises sequential tasks arranged in a linear workflow. The structure of the jobs may change dynamically at runtime with the addition or removal of tasks. Two scheduling heuristics are proposed and compared to a baseline policy in a cluster of distributed processors. We investigate how each strategy performs, with regard to the mean response time of the workload, as well as the fairness in the execution of the jobs. The simulation results reveal the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Furthermore, they showcase that the effectiveness of each scheduling technique depends on the variability in the service demands of the workload." @default.
