- W3174999214 abstract "The word “psychology” derives from the ancient Greek psyche, originally denoting “breath” but coming by the fourth century BC to signify the animating agency in living organisms, the “soul”. The two greatest intellectual figures of that time, Plato and Aristotle, established contrasting traditions in mental philosophy, each of which contributed importantly to the development of modern psychology. Descartes’s philosophy aroused differing reactions in Britain and on the continent. In Britain several major figures referred to collectively as the British associationists accepted the basic principles of mechanistic analysis but rejected the notion of innate ideas. They argued that all ideas including the most abstract had to have an ultimate basis in experience. While universally recognized as partially valid, British associationism was perceived by many, particularly in the Germanic countries, as too limited. They developed an opposing tradition, accentuating the active qualities of the mind itself in creating experience, and the nativist and rationalist aspects of Descartes’s philosophy." @default.
