- W3175179675 abstract "Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness of the elderly worldwide. [Bressler 2004] AMD is a central-retina disease from early to late stage, with various severities. AMD involves photoreceptor/retinal pigment epithelium/Bruch’s membrane/choriocapillaris, a neurovascular complex. AMD is pathogenically characterized as chronic progressive degenerative and inflammatory disease. AMD is genetically characterized as having polygenic and multifactorial inheritance. The strongest risk factor of AMD is advanced age. The aged individuals whose retinas are modified by environmental and genetic factors have higher incidence than normal aging population for developing clinical phenotypes of macular degeneration. Visual impairment due to AMD affects patients, caregivers, and society in multiple ways. In addition to the cost of anti-VEGF treatment, the economic consequences of vision impairment are enormous, including the direct costs, indirect costs, and intangible effects related to visual impairment. [Miller et al. 2016] However, AMD-related basic and clinical science is one of the most active and promising fields, which encompasses the essence of the achievements in neuroscience, particularly brain research, oncology, angiogenesis, immunology, gerontology and medical imaging etc. Advances in the regenerative medicine will guide improvements in gene-therapy and cell-based therapy of this disease." @default.
