- W3175742404 abstract "Objective To determine the diversity, abundance and association of An. gambiae s.l. larval densities with abundance of macro-invertebrates across habitat types. Methods Potential breeding habitats were identified and categorized followed by selection of two sampling sites and measurement of its area (m²) division into four quadrats. Two quadrats were considered for sampling. Samples were collected, sieved, sorted and preserved in 15 ml falcon tube containing 4 ml of 80% ethanol and identified to family and counted. Results A total of 13,427 specimens belonging to eighteen families of macro-invertebrates and 816 An. gambiae s.l. were collected. Ponds had the highest diversity of macro-invertebrates. The dominant macro-invertebrate in each habitat were: predacious diving beetles in ponds; mayflies in streams; culex. in temporary pools; and ground beetles in roadside ditches. An. gambiae s.l. larval densities negatively associated with the abundance of may-flies, dragonflies , water striders , midges , and crawling water beetles in ponds. In streams, An. gambiae larval densities negatively associated with abundance of damselflies and backswimmers while in temporary pools it negatively associated with Baetidae and positively with midge and culex. Carabidae negatively associated with An. gambiae larval densities in roadside ditches. Conclusions: Studies should investigate mechanisms of interaction leading to population reduction of An. gambiae s.l." @default.
