Agricultural systems models are promising tools to assess the effect of climate change impacts and elevated CO2 concentration in crop growth, hydrologic cycle, and soil and water quality. A newly upgraded Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2) hybrid with DSSAT crop models is capable of simulating crop water requirement, yield, carbon and nitrogen cycle as affected by changes in air temperature, atmospheric CO2 concentration, rainfall quantity and intensity, wind speed, solar radiation, and relative humidity under freezing conditions. Using this model, we are investigating the response of corn yield, crop water requirement, surface runoff, and subsurface drainage to changes in climate and elevated [CO2]atm in southern Quebec. The model was calibrated and validated against field observed yield, and drainage data at Ste Emmanuel, Quebec. Through CGCM3 model (Canadian Center for Climate Modeling and Analysis), predicted temperature is increasing by 2.49 to 6.01 throughout the year but drier summer and wet winter by 2080 under B1, A1B, and A2 scenarios in this region. Simulated results showed that crop water requirement (potential ET) increased by 1.0, 20.6%, and 31.1% under B1, A1B, and A2 scenarios, respectively. Tile drainage would increase by 45.1%, 31.3%, and 24.1%; surface runoff would increase by 4.9 cm, 6.8 cm, and 8.7 cm in relative to 1.1 cm of the baseline. Corn yield would be reduced by 20.5%, 33.0%, and 42.8% under B1, A1B, and A2 scenarios, respectively. This simulation showed that an increasing water demand and reduced yield under future warmer climate. Further analysis on the cause-effect will be conducted to determine why crop yield reduced under a warming climate in southern Quebec." @default.
