- W3176405846 abstract "Syncope is defined as transient loss of consciousness due to cerebral hypoperfusion, characterized by a spontaneous, rapid onset and short duration event with brief and complete recovery. The possible causes of true syncope are generally divided into four major categories, including reflex-mediated syncope, orthostatic hypotension, cardiac syncope, and other uncommon causes. The history and physical examination are the most important components of the evaluation of syncope. The choice of additional diagnostic testing should be individualized and based on the results of initial evaluation. Reflex syncope is the most common cause of syncope results from alteration in autonomic system activation. Types of reflex syncope include vasovagal syncope, situational syncope, and carotid sinus syndrome. The postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is one of the most common causes of orthostatic intolerance, characterized by an excessive increase in heart rate that occurs on standing without significant hypotension. Pseudosyncope is a conversion disorder that can mimic syncope or seizure." @default.
