- W3176809611 abstract "Micronutrients or trace elements are beneficial minerals which account for crucial physiological processes and enzymatic reactions in plants as well as crop species. It has been reported that exogenous application of several trace elements like silicon, nickel, manganese, and magnesium have promoted abiotic stress tolerance in plants. Cobalt also behaves as an important micronutrient and is invariably required for cobalamin synthesis and nitrogen fixation in plants. Some reports also indicate the potential of cobalt to stimulate plant growth and enhance the transport of other macro- and micronutrients from soil. This in turn improves seedling health and generates stress tolerance. The scientific databases exhaustively describe cobalt as a toxic heavy metal which incurs oxidative damages in plants at high concentrations. However the growth-promoting roles of cobalt at optimal low doses are not well appreciated in the present literature. Hence this chapter aims to review the available reports where cobalt acts as a beneficial element and holistically illustrates its potential in acting as a protective chemical for generating abiotic stress tolerance in plants." @default.
