- W3177364135 abstract "Dear Readers, Exactly 2 years ago, we announced an initiative (JOR Spine/ORS Spine Section) to develop a common language, a rigorous classification, and a scoring system to define disc degeneration and regeneration, from mouse to man. We are happy to present to you, in this June 2021 issue, the five papers describing these scoring systems for mouse, rat, rabbit, large animal, and man. Although some scoring systems have been published for the disc, there had not yet been a harmonization between scientists and across scales, and we hope that these five manuscripts will fill this gap for our spine research community. We are so very grateful to all authors of these manuscripts and appreciate very much the hard work that went into establishing these scoring systems. We also invite you to read the “Perspective” that the leaders of these efforts put together describing the scoring systems, reflecting on the choices that were made in the process, and the strengths and opportunities for refinement that these first papers represent. We know that science is a dynamic process, and therefore these first papers are milestones that will unavoidably need to be refined and updated over time, as technologies and methodologies (just think at Raman spectroscopy or CRISPR-Cas) will “invade” more and more our field of research. We have already started discussions with the ORS Spine Section Board on how to implement such a dynamic updating process in the years to come. We could think of new modernized versions of the five manuscripts every 5 years or an online repositor where scientists could submit (for review) actualized forms of the original manuscripts. One important lesson that each group learned was that training in these scoring systems is essential to increase inter-rate reliability—to that end, these teams are working now to organize virtual “training” sessions to showcase the finer points of these scoring systems and to train the community in their use. This will be a great resource as well, and we as Editors are open to any suggestions you might have to ensure that these becoming “living documents” are widely utilized by the community and refined over time—it would be sad if all this work and information was lost with time! In any case, we believe that these papers represent a first and important step for our community and we would like to thank all the authors and reviewers that contributed to this first “common language” papers' series. On another note, as you know, as a new journal we are on a “quest” for our first impact factor, expected in June 2022. We were happy this spring to find out that the JOR Spine has been accepted for indexing in SCOPUS, the final step prior to applying for an impact factor. We have been tracking the process on our own, and present to you here some interesting numbers that should make our readership and the ORS Spine community very happy. Currently, JOR Spine has published over 131 separate high-quality articles, since its inception in 2018. Our published work has proven very popular, as suggested by the large number of full-text downloads (>50 000 downloads in 2020 ➔ an 84% increase over 2019) and relatively high citation rates of our articles. We would for example refer to the online tool Dimensions Analytics, which tracks citation rates and other mentions of all published work. Dimensions currently recognizes 559 separate citations of JOR Spine articles, bringing the average citation rate to 4.27 citations per article, including our editorials! This is an amazing feat for such a young journal and indicates that the community is reading and submitting its best work at JOR Spine. Moreover, this trend is on a strong positive trajectory. As JOR Spine currently is awaiting an impact factor, we understand that researchers might be hesitant or reluctant to submit their work to JOR Spine. However, we would like to highlight the already amazing support and recognition by the spine community for JOR Spine. As we anticipate applying for and receiving our impact factor starting next year, based on current trends, we are very hopeful to obtain an impact factor of 4 or higher. We are ever so grateful for all the support JOR Spine has already received. We aspire to keep convincing the Spine community of our value through ensuring high-quality and impactful publications, processed in a short time frame and with constructive reviews, and through supporting and initiating meaningful projects and events. Also, similar to the “common language” histopathology paper series in this issue, we would strongly encourage any ambitious researcher or group of researchers to contact us with ideas or suggestions for special issues, community discussion, emerging topics, and so on. Our aspiration is to develop JOR Spine as the top journal of the spine research community. We sincerely hope you will consider submitting your impactful work to JOR Spine. Wishing you all a wonderful summer, Mauro, Dai, and Rob" @default.
