- W3177788453 abstract "PURPOSE: The force-velocity (F-V) relationship of skeletal muscle describes the inverse relationship between the velocity of muscle contraction and force production. The purpose of this study was to use peak torque (PT) at varying contraction speeds to characterize the F-V relationship in the quadriceps of healthy participants and those following ACLR. METHODS: A total of 369 participants included 189 patients with primary unilateral ACLR (22.6 ± 9.15 yr, 89 M, 172.4 ± 9.79 cm, 74.4 ± 17.88 kg, 7.2 ± 1.25 months post ACLR) and 180 healthy participants (21.4 ± 3.30 yr, 71 M, 172.8 ± 10.36 cm, 70.1 ± 12.39 kg). All completed maximal isometric knee extension for 30s at 90-degrees knee flexion and 8 repetitions of isokinetic knee extension at 90°/s and 180°/s. Normalized PT (Nm/kg) was recorded bilaterally from the ACLR patients and the averaged PT from the healthy participants’ limbs. We used ANOVAs to compare PT among contraction speed and between limbs (ACLR, ACLR contralateral, Healthy control). Post-hoc analysis were performed as indicated. Alpha level was set at α <0.05. RESULTS: There were main effects for contraction speed (p < 0.001) and limb (p < 0.001) indicating, on average, PT was lower for higher contraction speeds and, on average the ACLR limb was weaker than both the contralateral and healthy control limbs. (Table 1). There was an interaction between speed and limb type (p < 0.001); post hoc testing revealed that the ACLR limb was weaker than both the contralateral and control limbs for all speeds however, the control limbs were weaker than the ACLR contralateral limb for the isometric contraction speed. CONCLUSION: The magnitude of differences among ACLR limbs and healthy controls appears to be smaller at higher contraction speeds which has implications for muscle testing after ACLR.Table 1: Normalized Peak Torque (Nm/kg) at each contraction speed" @default.
