The glasshouse environment provides natural enemies with food, protection from the environment, and a physical barrier to dispersal. In glasshouse vegetables, biological control is applied by a seasonal inoculative release method. Limited numbers of parasites or predators are released periodically in short-term crops (6–9 months) to initiate the population buildup of beneficials for control throughout the growing season. Tetranychus urticae ( T. urticae ) is a major pest of glasshouse crops. Infestations of spider mites on cucumber are very common in most countries, whereas the occurrence of these pests on tomato and sweet pepper varies. Mites feed on cell chloroplasts, thereby reducing the photosynthetic capability of the leaf. Biological control of T. urticae is ideally suited to cucumbers, as the crop can tolerate severe damage without yield reduction. This, combined with access to an extremely efficient predator, explains the widespread use of biological control of T. urticae ." @default.
