The majority of ethanol from first generation biomass is obtained from sugar and starch-based biomass by microorganisms like Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zymomonas mobilis in well-known production processes. Bioethanol production from more complex biomasses (lignocellulose and seaweed) is more challenging because of the variety of sugars presented in such biomass and the use of thermophilic bacteria may be a good option in such processes. In this overview pros and cons of using different type of biomass are discussed for bioethanol production and examples of yields from various second and third generation biomass are presented." @default.
