- W3180080757 abstract "Sustainably feeding the world in light of climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time. For the past decade, a collection of donors mainly the Gates and Rockefeller Foundations and the US Agency for International Development have tapped genetically modified (GM) crops to be a key tool in building African food security. To achieve this goal, donors have promoted the establishment of regulatory laws in half a dozen African countries to facilitate research and commercialization of GM crops. However, since a majority of the world's GM patents belong to a handful of companies, and because African research labs widely do not have the ability to genetically modify in house, GM proponents have solidified partnerships between US agribusiness companies and African research councils to jointly conduct research. However, these efforts are not without controversy. In Ghana and other African countries, strong oppositional movements have grown in response to GM efforts. In this paper, drawing from 13 months of ethnographic research among Ghanaian scientists and officials tasked with commercializing GM crops as well as activists who seek to halt these efforts, I show how both pro-GM scientists and anti-GM activists challenge the authority of donors to identify and define Ghana's agricultural failures and futures. By asking, does Bill Gates love Africa more than me? or declaring, there are no hungry people in this land, these actors label and challenge a global development system that denigrates African actors and in turn, demand space to theorize and determine Ghanaian agricultural futures and sovereignty." @default.
