- W3181711122 abstract "Hemodynamics and arterial stiffness react to various stimuli, including glucose loading. While vascular health is impaired in individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity, the effects of glucose loading on central and peripheral blood pressure (BP) and arterial stiffness between healthy individuals and individuals with type 2 diabetes are unclear. PURPOSE: To compare hemodynamics and arterial stiffness in response to an oral glucose challenge (OGC) between healthy individuals and individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy individuals (CON, 48 ± 10 yrs) and 20 individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D, 52 ± 8 yrs) volunteered for the study. Hemodynamics and arterial stiffness were assessed at rest (R), and at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 minutes after OGC, which consisted of 50 g glucose solution. A 2x7 repeated measures ANOVA was used to evaluate the effect of OGC across groups and time. RESULTS: CON had significantly (p < 0.05) lower baseline values for all variables than T2D (heart rate (HR): 56 ± 10 vs. 66 ± 8 bpm; central systolic BP (cSBP): 111 ± 12 vs 127 ± 12 mmHg; central diastolic BP (cDBP): 78 ± 8, vs 87 ± 10 mmHg; brachial systolic BP (bSBP): 120 ± 12, vs 135 ± 13 mmHg; brachial diastolic BP (bDBP): 77 ± 8, vs 86 ± 10 mmHg; arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity): 6.8 ± 1.0, vs 7.8 ± 0.9 m/s). OGC significantly increase HR (CON, R vs. 60: 56 ± 10 vs. 62 ± 9 bpm; T2D, R vs. 40: 66 ± 9 vs. 71 ± 8 bpm, p < 0.05) and decreased cDBP (CON, R vs. 50: 78 ± 8 vs. 73 ± 10 mmHg; T2D, R vs. 40: 87 ± 10 vs. 80 ± 11 mmHg, p < 0.05) and bDBP (CON, R vs. 50: 77 ± 8 vs. 72 ± 10 mmHg; T2D, R vs. 40: 86 ± 10 vs. 81 ± 9 mmHg, p < 0.05) at different times in both groups. In addition, OGC significantly decreased cSBP (R vs. 40: 127 ± 12 vs. 120 ± 11 mmHg, p < 0.05) in T2D group and bSBP (R vs. 40: 120 ± 12 vs. 118 ± 13 mmHg, p < 0.05) in CON group. However, there was no change on arterial stiffness. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that glucose loading alters central and peripheral blood pressure in a similar fashion with no changes on arterial stiffness in both healthy individuals and individuals with type 2 diabetes.
