- W318206264 abstract "■ In recent years, adults with learning disabilities and persons in contact with them (e.g., educators, service providers, family members, and advocates) have come to realize that manifestations of learning disabilities extend throughout an individual's life (Brown, 1984; Chelser, 1982; Cummings & Maddux, 1985; Fafard & Haubrich, 1981; Geist & McGrath, 1983; Johnson & Blalock, 1987; Lean, 1983; Polloway, Smith, & Patton, 1984; Ross, 1987; Smith, 1988; White, 1985). Myriad learning needs have been identified for this population, from basic academic skills to performance of adult social roles, career development, and vocational training. In fact, funding for education that increases employability has been available to clients with learning disabilities since the U.S. Rehabilitation Services Administration accepted learning disability (LD) as a funded handicapping condition in 1981 (Biller, 1988). Issues related to instruction of LD adults are by no means restricted to adult basic education (ABE) and literacy instruction, since such adults may appear in any adult education setting, including professional continuing education. Thus, adult educators in a variety of settings are becoming aware of the need to adapt programs and develop interventions for students with learning disabilities. Yet, the concerns informally expressed by ABE teachers suggest this adult education context as a logical starting point for needed research on programs for LD adults. In reality, we know little about the prevalence of learning disabilities among participants in adult basic education and high school completion (ABE/GED) programs. Travis (1979) has suggested the incidence in ABE classes may be as high as 80%. This is in sharp contrast to the service level to LD children in the public schools. Only 4.8% of U.S. children received special education for the learning disabled during 1987 (Stern & Chandler, 1988). Using the 4.8% estimate to extrapolate prevalence among the 2,559,550 adults enrolled in ABE/GED pro-" @default.
