- W3182094391 abstract "The Watershed development approach has proved to be successful in conserving the natural resources for better livelihood of people in rainfed areas of India. The impact of different programmes funded through Government, International agencies or corporates is good; however, the sustainability issues have remained unaddressed. There have been some successful examples of sustainable development of watersheds, and the Randullabad watershed happens to be one such successful case. The Randullabad watershed project in Satara district of Maharashtra state, implemented under Indo-German Watershed Development Programme (IGWDP) Phase-III, was assessed for sustainability using new methodology suggested by Kakade (2017). The new methodology based on the principles of ‘strong sustainability’ of FAO is advocated for sustainability assessment of ‘new generation holistic watershed development projects’ in India. Under the social domain, sustainability scores were 0.45 at baseline (2008), 0.66 at project completion (2013) and 0.79 after five years post-project (2018); under economic domain, these scores were 0.50, 0.87 and 1.27 while under ecological domain, scores were 0.46, 0.86 and 1.07 respectively. These scores are against the threshold level of 1.00 for each domain. Watershed Sustainability Index (WSI) improved from 0.47 in 2008 to 0.79 in 2013 and to the level of 1.02 in the year 2018 against the threshold of 1.00. Since the WSI in 2018 was very high, it was thought necessary to ascertain the rationale of high level of sustainability of watershed. This paper throws light on the factors contributing to the sustainability of the Randullabad watershed. This analysis of the parameters contributing to the sustainability of watershed revealed the dominance of dynamic and holistic project design, continued investment, local leadership and institutions, role of external facilitating organizations, creation of remunerative value chains, hybrid model of politicization of watershed governance and shift towards the circular economy." @default.
