- W3182199033 abstract "We are delighted to welcome attendees to the second UK and Ireland Computing Education Research (UKICER) conference. The UKICER conference is intended to fill a gap in current conference provision. There are several large conferences held internationally (e.g. The SIGCSE Technical Symposium, ITICSE, ICER and CompEd) and there are more regional conferences (e.g. Koli Calling and ACE) or specialised conferences (e.g. WIPSCE, CEP). The introduction of computer science into schools in the UK and in Ireland highlights an increasing interest in computer science education research, but without a local forum to bring together these researchers. Our hope is that UKICER can develop a stronger and larger local community of British and Irish computing education researchers, to both consider locally-relevant issues, and to develop into a leading international location for computer science education research.UKICER 2020 received 25 paper submissions, of which 10 were accepted, giving an acceptance rate of 40%. The papers cover a broad range of topics in computing education. The authors originate from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Norway and Finland. Each paper had a minimum of 3 double blind reviews. To address potential conflict of interest issues, particularly prevalent in a small community like ours, we followed ACM policy. Under this policy, reviewers indicated conflicts of interest prior to being allocated papers to review. To address conflicts with the programme chairs, an associate program chair (APC) was assigned who: set up a small panel unknown to the programme chairs; having sent the panel members the relevant papers, the reviews and any reviewer discussion, instructed the panel to decide on accept/reject decisions for those papers; and presented their decisions back to the final programme meeting. The APC this year was Sally Fincher, and we thank her for developing and carrying out this process.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, UKICER 2020 took place fully on-line, although we were keen to recreate opportunities for meetings and discussion in the format. As well as paper presentations incorporating discussion segments, we had a keynote, two workshops (accepted via a general call), a discussion session on developing the community, posters and time in-between for personal discussion. We are very grateful to the local organisation and to the programme committee for their role in reviewing the papers, both promptly and thoroughly. We are confident that they provided valuable input to the authors. We are also grateful to the authors who submitted their work in uncertain times." @default.
