- W3183262617 abstract "The automotive industry has delivered transformative innovation enabling the wide-spread electrification of vehicles. The More Electric Aircraft initiatives of the past decades have since led to electrifying the propulsion system. Aviation can leverage the innovation within the automotive industry, however the needs of the two applications do not completely overlap. The purpose of this paper is to compare inherently low-cost automotive electric machine performance to that of the needs of aviation applications. Experimental hardware results in tandem with Motor-CAD software are used to determine the extent at which inherently low- cost, interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines developed for the automotive applications can source electrical power in an aviation platform. Specifically, experimental data with an uncontrolled automotive machine is provided and used in showing calibration methods for a Motor-CAD electromagnetic and thermal model. While these methods are typically used to reduce uncertainty in the output response, the results herein are used to identify areas for method improvement. The authors discuss some lower cost, uncontrolled characterization steps that can be performed to reduce uncertainty in the electromagnetic and thermal model of this IPM. Finally, the Motor-CAD model simulation of a mission cycle is shown to determine the amount of per-unit power the automotive machine can source in relation to typical aviation requirements and specifications." @default.
