- W3184073979 abstract "This chapter examines the relationship between Donald Trump and American think tanks and reassesses the model advanced by Abelson and Carberry (1997) according to which presidential candidates with no prior background in federal politics and those who registered as strong political ideologues would be most attractive to think tanks inside the Beltway. In short, Trump’s lack of intellectual curiosity, along with a host of other personality traits, demands a reconsideration of how think tanks market their ideas to those in power who are both unwilling and incapable of heeding their advice. This chapter explores the innumerable obstacles that Donald Trump and his administration have put in the way of think tanks, and how these institutes have managed to survive and thrive in what has become an increasingly toxic political environment. Despite the limited access well-established think tanks have had to Trump and to his ever-changing inner circle, public policy institutes have not met their demise as some pundits have predicted, nor have they elected to bury their heads in the sand until a new administration comes to power. On the contrary, although they face an uphill battle, they have learned to become more strategic when it comes to how and where to make their presence felt. The lessons think tanks have learned since Trump has come to power helps to shed light on the capacity of public policy institutes to engage in knowledge mobilization, especially when barriers are put in place to ward off new and innovative ideas." @default.
