• W3184319490 abstract "Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) offer the most promise among the pressure gain combustion concepts due to their prospective application in both propulsion and power generation. RDEs, however, are highly prone to a wide range of operating modes and behaviors that render causal analysis of propulsive metrics a non-trivial enterprise. To overcome this goal, the current manuscript approaches this conundrum through a data-driven perspective. Towards this end, six different geometries – attained by effecting two nozzle throat areas (truncated aerospike) and three channel widths – are tested under back-pressurized conditions using hydrogen-air mixtures. The resulting tests composed of more than 200 different operating points are treated by regression analysis that uses twelve distinct independent parameters and three dependent propulsive variables. By considering each of these inputs and outputs separately, 36 different dependencies (or data pairs) are analyzed using regression analysis to arrive at an understanding of statistical correlation, if any. An important finding from this study is that the RDE-specific issues (like operating modes and frequencies, for instance) do not have any statistical impact on the propulsive performance.
