- W3184449694 abstract "High performance fuels are alternative fuels that can potentially reduce aviation greenhouse gas emissions on a life-cycle basis, while also improving aircraft performance. Previous studies from the authors have investigated system-wide benefits of these fuels, such as fleet-level fuel savings and carbon emissions, based on assumed aircraft efficiency gains. The capability to estimate efficiency gains based on fuel properties was lacking in the literature. This paper addresses this research gap through the development of surrogate models calibrated to aircraft from different classes, capable of estimating fuel burn given flight distance and fuel properties such as specific energy and energy density. These models were incorporated into an interactive capability that allows for system-level benefits to be evaluated for any pair fuel properties. The capability was demonstrated through the evaluation of a Pareto frontier of high performance fuel properties. Results suggest that 1) increasing energy density reduces the volume of fuel burned, with relatively low impact in weight of fuel burned and carbon emissions, 2) increasing specific energy reduces the weight of fuel burned and carbon emissions, with relatively low impact in volume of fuel burned, and 3) the benefits were assessed for fuel properties obtained from the literature and the volumetric fuel savings were as high as 4.62%." @default.
