- W3186257922 abstract "Muscular strength is critical for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) to promote their mobility, cardiovascular capacity, and performance of daily-living/vocational activities. Growing evidence suggests muscular strength testing and resistance training (RT) can be influenced substantially by variables such as a participant’s motivation, performance of RT tasks, and capacity to tolerate maximal loads. The mechanisms by which persons with ID improve muscular strength and derive associated benefits remain poorly understood. PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of published, peer-reviewed clinical trials of RT interventions to evaluate their effects on muscular strength in adults with ID. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, the review focuses on clinical trials that recorded quantitative measures of maximum muscular strength. Eleven electronic databases were searched. After screening 1,996 search records (earliest available to May 2020), 11 clinical trials were meta-analyzed using RevMan software. The risk of bias was assessed by two independent reviewers using the Tool for the Assessment of Study Quality and Reporting in Exercise (TESTEX). Protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020184905). RESULTS: Collectively, the analysis included 388 adults with ID, ages 25-58 years (210 in experimental groups, 178 in control groups). The RT interventions, while heterogeneous (I2 = 81%, p < .000), had an overall significant effect (SMD = 0.92; 95% CI = 0.40 to 1.45; z = 3.43; p = .000) on muscular strength in adults with ID. The effect was larger (SMD = 0.82; 95% CI = 0.32 to 1.31; z = 3.25; p = .001) and less heterogeneous (I2 = 40%, p = .140) for non-combined RT interventions than for RT interventions combined with aerobic and/or balance exercises (I2 = 90%, p < .000; SMD = 1.16; 95% CI = 0.23 to 2.09; z = 2.45; p = .01). The TESTEX scores ranged from 2 to 14 (M = 8.4, SD = 3.7; out of 15). CONCLUSION: RT interventions (particularly when not combined with other exercises) are effective in promoting muscular strength in adults with ID. The small number of RT interventions; the poorly described or executed familiarization, intervention, and measurement protocols; and the compromised methodological quality of the studies limit interpretations and warrant further investigations." @default.
