- W318655861 abstract "In his 1995 Encyclical Letter, Ut unum sint,(1) Pope John Paul II strongly reaffirmed commitment of Roman Catholic to ecumenical movement, movement that Vatican II recognized as movement of conversion and change of heart. encyclical reminds us that Vatican II's Decree on Ecumenism affirms a clear connection between renewal, conversion and reform.(2) It is in this spirit that pope invites church leaders to engage with him in a 'dialogue of conversion'(3) whose end would be reform of ministry of bishop of Rome. In this dialogue, he calls us to seek together the forms in which this ministry may accomplish service of love recognized by all.(4) aim of this dialogue is not to negotiate compromise solution but, rather, to seek truth together, to clarify nature of ministry of communion that belongs to bishop of Rome and is intended to serve whole church - in other words, to discern essential dimensions that belong to identity of its mission. Talk of reform and change often provokes reaction of fear and concern that these would be threat to ecclesial identity. If papacy were to change, would not something of identity of Roman Catholic be undermined? Or, if Orthodox and Reformation churches were to embrace ministry of communion by bishop of Rome, would they be compromising their own identities? In their insightful study, For Conversion of Churches, Groupe des Dombes offered some helpful clues to an understanding of identity and change. Seeking to respond to misgivings of those who fear loss of identity when confronted by ecumenical movement's call to conversion, they affirmed that for churches, as for all human persons, identity is dynamic reality. Indeed, they were able to affirm that there is no identity without conversion.(5) Identity and conversion are thus integrally related, as both only be centered in attitudes of faithfulness, truth and obedience.(6) This sense of identity and conversion resonates with tone of John Paul II's expressed desire to heed the request made of [him] to find way of exercising primacy which, while in no way renouncing what is essential to its mission, is nonetheless open to new situation.(7) It is in this light that I would like to consider some of proposals for conversion offered by Groupe des Dombes in their consideration of papacy. In response to John Paul II's invitation to dialogue, we have gathered here to consider what is essential to mission of papal primacy and thus belongs to identity of its mission and identity of one church of Jesus Christ. To engage in this dialogue and discernment we must ask what can be changed or converted to reflect more faithfully identity of this gift to churches. Further, what in life of churches that do not presently recognize and embrace papacy must be converted if they are to receive gift of this ministry of communion? As contribution toward our discussion of emerging consensus on primacy of bishop of Rome, I would like to present some highlights from 1986 document of Groupe des Dombes, The Ministry of Communion in Universal Church.(8) To my knowledge, this text has yet to be translated into English, so it may be unfamiliar to some readers. Groupe des Dombes - an independent group of about forty Catholics and Protestants (of both Reformed and Lutheran backgrounds) - meets every year for week of prayer and study at Trappist monastery of Notre Dame des Dombes in France. Groupe, which takes its name from their meeting place, has gathered in this manner for sixty years in an ecumenical commitment that links spirituality and theology, prayer and study of concrete ecumenical challenges. Foundations: Previous Studies on Ministry and Episcopal document on The Ministry of Communion in Universal Church follows upon an earlier agreed statement of Groupe des Dombes, Towards Reconciliation of Ministries,(9) that appeared in 1973. …" @default.
