- W3186752822 abstract "We live in a moment of profound political division in the United States. Beyond the familiar tensions between red and blue, we are plagued by deepening polarizations not exclusively tied to party affiliation. These tensions circle around issues and policy but are fuelled by affective narratives that drive us to cluster into like-minded communities, siloed by geography and media, where our biases are reinforced, and political leanings intensified. Creative placemaking practices that take into account both the material or socio-economic conditions of space and place, as well as the performative experience of encounter, are particularly equipped to engage with and unpack these narratives. Drawing on an examination of the iterative, experimental placemaking project, Department of Transformation, conceived by Minnesota-based theatre artist Ashley Hanson, this chapter explores how creative placemaking might challenge the assumed progressive politic of art practice and conservative agendas of rural community agencies. It explores how these works not only address a rural–urban binary that limits the agency and visibility of rural artists and residents, but how they disrupt a singular narrative of the rural, instead offering a picture of ‘rural America’ that is hybrid, mobile, and affectively linked." @default.
