Penetration (imbibition), or rise, in capillaries with a smooth geometry changing under the influence of temperature gradients is a topic that has attracted considerable interest because of the various applications within the inkjet, cosmetics and crude oil extraction industries. The theoretical model we present has been validated with laboratory results; using an experimental acrylic cell in which conical capillary perforations were made. The results show the dependence on temperature effects of both the change in geometry and the change in viscosity and surface tension. The fluid used in the experiments was glycerol, and the images presented here show the penetration and ascent of the liquid within the capillary. The theoretical and experimental results correlate well." @default.
