- W3189071957 abstract "Lift and drag characteristics of insect-like wing planforms are measured using a one degree-of-freedom revolving experimental setup simulating the translational phase of a flapping wing stroke. Force and torque measurements were conducted over three revolutions at Reynolds number of 10000, representing a typical upper bound for insect flight regime. Nine wing planforms representing three aspect ratios and three wing area centroid location values were measured. All wings had a constant thickness-to-chord ratio. Both early and steady measurements were collected. Early measurements were defined as starting from the moment after the initial transients due to acceleration to the end of the first revolution, whereas steady measurements were defined as to extend over the second and third revolutions. In general, early measurements showed higher lift and drag coefficient values compared to steady measurements, but consistently showed lower peak drag coefficients towards 90 degree angle of attack. It is shown that the area centroid location had a greater effect on the lift coefficients whereas the aspect ratio had a greater effect on the drag coefficient." @default.
