- W318909691 abstract "GUEST EDITORIAL The Minority International Research Trainee (MIRT) Program directed by Dr. Beverly McElmurry, at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and funded by the Forgarty International, National Institutes of Health was awarded to me for Summer 2001. The goal of the ten weeks training program is to assist nursing students to enhance their knowledge of research in an international setting and to gain cultural experiences with faculty mentors, who serve as principal investigators of the project. I also had the distinct opportunity of recommending three nursing students from Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing, who was accepted into the program to study and conduct research in a rural South African community. My initial African travels occurred in 1976. Since then, I have visited several African countries. Interest in the continent of Africa certainly has not waned, but has expanded over the years. Relationships with African students and peers have been developed and maintained. Some of my most rewarding student/teacher alliances have been with African students, studying in the United States. I have found them to be extremely motivated and receptive to professional guidance. Therefore, global health issues are important and have remained an interest. Initially, after completion of graduate studies, my career plans were to reside in a West African country, for at least two years, to study traditional health care practices. This goal has not yet been realized, however, it remains an interest, and hopefully, a viable option. However, conducting international research, nor responsible for students, were ever components of the international travels. Therefore, the MIRT experience was also a new occurrence, for me. The MIRT program provided an opportunity to serve in dual roles of a mentor and a mentee. Accountability was assumed for helping to enhance the student's learning, while reorienting myself to the formal research process. Although, recent participation in small research projects was included in my duties, the initiation of a formal community based research project had not been a component of the administrative duties over the last decade. Within the boundaries of my previous role, as an administrator, there had been several initiatives and discussions regarding developing international partnerships, with both West Africa and Southern African Countries. Additionally there had been explorations regarding joint projects with institutions in Mexico and Caribbean countries. Zheng's work (2001) noted that international collaboration requires flexibility and sophistication. The authors further noted, Global trade and immigration make it essential for nurses to know about innovations and issues in nursing in diverse settings (p 121). Perhaps we had neither the infrastructure (flexibility) nor the sophistication necessary to implement proposed international partnerships. Nevertheless, it was one of several initiatives advocated. I have been consistently mentored during my professional career. The importance of networking and maintaining contacts has been a cornerstone for acquiring information and engaging in new and/or innovative opportunities. The MIRT's research project was no exception. A chance to mentor students was an occasion to give back. In retrospect, the expectations that I had of these students were somewhat apprehensive. I was not sure that they would fully comprehend the significant opportunity that they would have, at this phase of their professional careers, although, they were very mature. They verbalized the recognition of this project as a significant milestone. The students stated that they were willing to overcome any potential barriers or obstacles. I was not entirely convinced. As a recent faculty member, I did not have information about the students regarding their interest in global health. Nor, was I cognizant of how they interfaced with their colleagues, many of whom are international students, especially African. …" @default.
