Of the twenty-seven projects of the Cooperative First Grade Re search, this project was unique to the extent that all three treatment groups used similar developmental readers for vocabulary study and story content. The variables to be evaluated, then, were the instruc tional procedures of the classroom teachers of the separate treatment groups. There were three major questions to be answered by the research pro cedures : 1. Which of three methods of reading instruction using similar basal reader story content produced higher skills achievement at the end of grade one? 2. On the basis of these three methods of instruction, do reading achievement differences exist be tween boys and girls within and among the treatment groups? 3. Are there differences in the reading achievements of pupils of the three treatment groups on the basis of intelligence levels? This study was conducted in Fres no County, a rich agricultural area of the central San Joaquin Valley of California. The treatment groups comprised the entire 1964 first grade population (N = 920) of the Clovis and S?nger unified school districts located in adjacent communities. Approximately a third of the pupils who attend these schools are Mexi can-American, with the percentage considerably higher in the more rural areas. The mean IQ of the pupils was significantly below the normal IQ" @default.
