- W3191949969 abstract "This study investigates the acoustic performance of a double degree of freedom Helmholtz resonator, both experimentally and numerically. Altering the chamber dimensions of the resonating cavity, was investigated. Experiments were performed using a grazing flow impedance tube and an aluminium modular resonator body, with sixteen resonating cavities, which can be switched between a single and double degree of freedom resonating cavity configuration. The effect of changing the resonating cavity internal dimensions on the underlying sound attenuation is elaborated by presenting the transmission loss and coefficient induced and the change in sound pressure level in the duct. As the volume ratio is increased, a minimum, in the difference between the primary and secondary resonance peaks is observed. This may indicate the presence of an optimum volume ratio of the two internal cavities in the double degree of freedom resonator, for a broad bandwidth of sound absorption. The results showed an increase in the bandwidth of attenuated frequencies when an acoustic liner was formed with resonating cavities of different volume ratios. In addition, the order of these resonating cavities within the liner did not have any effect on the sound attenuation performance. Transmission loss and transmission coefficient are also used to present a relation between the sound attenuation performance and the distance between two resonating cavities. The spacing study results showed the existence of optimised distances between two resonating cavities to maximise transmission loss and bandwidth of frequencies attenuated. Maximum transmission loss was achieved when the resonating cavities were spaced at a quarter wavelength of the associated resonance frequency, whereas the broadest bandwidth of frequencies was attenuated when the resonators were spaced at a half wavelength of the associated resonance frequency." @default.
