- W3193654779 abstract "This article uses a sociology of action approach to understand how a social problem is being handled in France. It analyzes conflictual efforts to confront the problem not only in public arenas (the media, parliament) but also in more discreet spaces, such as joint management of occupational risks in private companies by a group made up of employer and employee representatives (systeme paritaire). Drawing on a corpus of archives and interviews, it analyzes the political and union struggles of the early 2000s around getting psychological hardships such as stress and psychosocial risks recognized as occupational diseases. By focusing the analysis on three arenas implicated in politicizing the definition of those hardships (science; policymaking; and company administration, specifically, employer-employee management occupational risk), I show how efforts to get them recognized as occupational diseases butted up against the structural constraints of the systeme paritaire in French companies as well as indecision at the state level. Because the Ministry of Labor based its decisions on the outcome of negotiations between union and management organizations, its work reproduced the existing inequalities between those two groups of actors, inequalities implicated to some degree in the move to individualize compensation for those disorders. The article thus sheds light on the processes that work to depoliticize work-related health damage and make it a personal problem." @default.
