For this purpose, heterogeneous photocatalysis based on semiconductor binary and ternary compounds is being widely studied. Almost all binary compounds show photocatalytic activity when irradiated by ultraviolet light, but the photocatalytic efficiency is hindered due to their bandgap and this limits their use as potential photocatalysts under the visible light region. Ternary compounds including metal oxides and chalcogenides have been effectively utilized for degradation of recalcitrant pollutants under the visible light. Various approaches have been considered to design visible light photocatalysts One such approach includes the formation of new energy levels among bands of semiconductor materials using various dopant species. Doping with plasmonic metals is usually proposed to resolve less photocatalytic efficiency of ternary compounds and to enhance their visible light response. Silver and its nanoparticles have been used extensively for wastewater treatment. Herein, the latest progress in the development of novel silver-doped ternary compounds by various synthesis methods has been discussed in detail. Moreover, the possible doping mechanism, charge transfer mechanisms, and enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of recalcitrant dyes and other pollutants owing to the surface plasmon response have also been described systematically." @default.
