- W3195062593 abstract "Robotic matter describes non-equilibrium systems that exhibit adaptable, autonomous and self-taught behavior that bridges the gap between materials, machines and living organisms. A central challenge of the field is to understand how robust responses at large scales emerge from programmed active components. Here, we build and characterize theoretically a class of flexible robotic materials that strategically utilize internal nonconservative forces giving rise to self-sustained work cycles. We harness these inherently nonlinear cycles to power and shed new light on otherwise familiar processes including impact deflection and locomotion. Beyond distributed robotics, our work suggests how these nonlinear work cycles and associated functionalities can emerge as solutions of the non-conservative dynamics of active and biological materials." @default.
