- W3195180722 abstract "Educational and social contact interventions demonstrate modest effectiveness in lowering stigma towards those with mental illness. More recently, symptom simulations (e.g., hallucinations) are being implemented with high expectations for decreasing stigma, but have yielded mixed outcomes. The absence of a sufficient learning context accompanying a simulation may be undermining its effectiveness. In this study, it was hypothesized that the presentation of social contact would provide an ample learning context and facilitate the effectiveness of a schizophrenia simulation in decreasing stigma. A total of 242 participants were randomly assigned to one of three intervention conditions: 1) social contact, 2) simulation, and 3) social contact followed by simulation and measured on three dimensions of stigma. Immediately and one week later, social contact alone was effective in lowering stigma [F(2,64–67) = 13.58–60.27,p < .001], but simulations alone were not effective [F(2,88–89) = 0.62–4.13,p >.01]. In the combined intervention, stigma decreased on two of the three dimensions [F(2,74–78) = 6.59–20.21,p < .002] but at a smaller magnitude than social contact alone. There are several possibilities accounting for the low effectiveness of the simulation here including an insufficient learning context or the simulation's lack of content instilling hope or countering stereotypes. Caution is strongly recommended in utilizing simulations as an anti-stigma intervention." @default.
