- W3195280207 abstract "This research investigates the biophysical andinstitutional mechanisms affecting the distribution of metals inthe Sonoran Desert of Arizona. To date, a long-term,interdisciplinary perspective on metal pollution in the region hasbeen lacking. To address this gap, I integrated approaches fromenvironmental chemistry, historical geography, and institutionaleconomics to study the history of metal pollution in the desert.First, by analyzing the chemistry embodied in thesequentially-grown spines of long-lived cacti, I created a recordof metal pollution that details biogeochemical trends in the desertsince the 1980s. These data suggest that metal pollution is notsimply a legacy of early industrialization. Instead, I foundevidence of recent metal pollution in both the heart of the cityand a remote, rural location. To understand how changing land usesmay have contributed to this, I next explored the historicalgeography of industrialization in the desert. After identifyingcities and mining districts as hot spots for airborne metals, Iused a mixture of historical reports, maps, and memoirs toreconstruct the industrial history of these polluted landscapes. Inthe process, I identified three key transitions in the energy-metalnexus that drove the redistribution of metals from mineral depositsto urban communities. These transitions coincided with theColumbian exchange, the arrival of the railroads, and the economicrestructuring that accompanied World War II. Finally, to determinehow legal and political forces may be influencing the fate ofmetals, I studied the evolution of the rights and duties affectingmetals in their various forms. This allowed me to track changes inthe institutions regulating metals from the mining laws of the 19thcentury through their treatment as occupational and public healthhazards in the 20th century. In the process, I show how Arizona’senvironmental and resource institutions were often transformed byextra-territorial concerns. Ultimately, this created aninstitutional system that compartmentalizes metals and fails toappreciate their capacity to mobilize across legal and biophysicalboundaries to accumulate in the environment. Long-term,interdisciplinary perspectives such as this are critical foruntangling the complex web of elements and social relationstransforming the modern world." @default.
