- W3196162117 abstract "Abstract The worldwide recreational use of exogenous (phyto- and synthetic) cannabinoids represents a major public health and social issue. In particular, there is increasing evidence that the use of these substances is associated with increased risk of developing psychoses. However, the mechanisms underlying cannabinoid-related psychosis remain largely unexplored. Since cannabinoids modulate the action of the endocannabinoid system upon binding and activation of cannabinoid receptors, dysregulation of this system has arisen as a plausible hypothesis for the increasing risk of developing psychotic symptoms in cannabinoid users. In this chapter, we revise the main etiological features behind psychosis, address potential mechanisms by which cannabinoids may trigger the onset of psychosis, and discuss some of the main future challenges in the field." @default.
