- W3196271898 abstract "The study of earthquake clustering provides crucial information on earthquake dynamics, like the evolution of mainshock-aftershock sequences and swarms. This chapter discusses the feature of multiple embedded arrival rates that can distinguish seismic clusters from background seismicity and even reveal their structure, generalized into the idea of a Markovian arrival process (MAP) to be used as a change point tool for the detection of seismic excitations. It introduces the MAP model in detail and provides the necessary notation. The chapter examines the results concerning the efficiency of the process to detect clusters in various tectonic environments and magnitude thresholds, along with the subsequent problems that arise. The MAP shows great potential in describing the temporal evolution of seismicity, both the background and the clustered one. The framework of the multiple embedded occurrence rates is proven effective for a detailed approximation of the earthquake generation process, although the fitting procedure remains a challenging optimization problem." @default.
