- W3196351444 abstract "The Muḥarram processions of South Asia have been noted as inclusive with Shi’i, Sunni, and even non-Muslim participants, particularly in the nineteenth century. Some elements of these processions in South Asia were rather unique, both in their enactment and the physical objects that they used: among the latter are the architectural models constructed of paper and bamboo and referred to as tā’ziah or sometimes as tābuts (the latter a misnomer). In western India, these constructed floats were ritually drowned in a river or the sea, after they had been paraded through the city. These tā’ziah could be thought of as local renditions of the Iranian nakhl-gardani using regional architectural forms instead of the Iranian nakhl (a colossal tear-drop shaped wood-framed bier); alternatively, they could be understood as memes of temple chariot processions common in South Asia. This chapter examines the architectural forms of nineteenth-century tā’ziah in Mumbai and Pune in the context of eighteenth-century temples in the western Deccan." @default.
