- W3196886445 abstract "Confessions or declarations were statements given by those accused of crime to the authorities in Scotland (as elsewhere). They were often used as part of the criminal process to enable a prosecution. This example is found amongst the surviving records of the Justiciary Court, the highest criminal court in Scotland, and was part of the prosecution case against the teenager James Duncan, accused of theft in 1770. Personal narratives for very poor and illiterate people are often hard to find for the eighteenth century and court records provide a useful access point to their lives and voices. As can be seen below, such accounts tend not to use a lot of ‘emotion words’ as traditionally understood, but they nonetheless can provide some insight into the emotional worlds of these communities. In Duncan’s confession, we are provided with a rich account of his relationships with other men and local communities as he travelled across the country. Despite not having the best reputation, many people provided him with hospitality, sometimes food and drink. On the road, he also met people with whom he formed friendships of sorts, sometimes sleeping with them for company. Such an account might be used to explore concepts of neighbourly love, trust and security amongst the Scottish poor." @default.
