- W3197652250 abstract "In recent decades there has been considerable development of the National Road Network, both in its length (by constructing new roads) and volume of traffic (with the increasing use of motor vehicles). With the reduced need to build new roads, the conservation and rehabilitation of the existing network are essential to ensure the structural and functional quality of the pavements. The need for structural repair of the roadways brings the necessity to evaluate their bearing capacity, obtained through their deflection. Deflection can be used to provide the stiffness modulus of the pavement layers. It can be measured using a variety of test equipment, being the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) the most commonly used. However, it is often found that pavements do not perform their intended functions for the period they have been designed. This premature structural quality degradation may be related to the sensitivity that load capacity tests have to variations of weathering factors such as temperature and rainfall (which changes the water content of soils). This problem is the primary motivation to carry out this dissertation. In this study, a few pavements with different structural and material constitutions were selected, in which Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and with the Light Falling Weight Deflectometer (LFWD) tests were performed. During the development of the work, three study objects were defined. The first study object aims to compare tests performed with the FWD and the LFWD and analyze the relationship between those methods. The second study object intends to investigate the rainfall influence in the bearing capacity of the selected pavements, comparing tests performed in two different periods (after a dry period and after a period with consecutive rainfall days). The third study object proposes to analyze the influence of temperature in asphalt pavements, by performing hourly tests, in a day with considerable thermal amplitude. At last, it was possible to conclude that there is a clear relationship between the bearing capacity and the weather conditions." @default.
